Chapter 19: No Wolf

The tray hit my shoulder, and the knife came down.

I didn't think about it.

My wolf did.

I stepped inside the arc of Odette's arm, and I closed my fingers around her wrist.

The blade stopped a hand's width from my throat.

It shook there, and then it stopped shaking.

Odette pulled with everything she had, and her arm didn't move.

I could feel her pulse hammering under my thumb, light and quick and entirely human.

There was no glow in her. There was no strength in her at all.

She was my sister, and she was twenty-two, and she was only a girl with a kitchen knife.

"Let go," she gasped.

"Drop it."

"Let go of me!"

I turned my wrist slightly.

The knife rang off the stones, and the whole courtyard flinched.

Finlay was beside me in the next breath, with two guards behind him.

"Don't," I said, and he stopped.

Odette sagged, and I let her.

She dropped to her knees on the flagstones, with the silver knife beside her and the tray rolling slowly away.

"Say it," I said.

"Say what?"

"What you knew."

She laughed, a cracked, awful sound, and wiped her wet face with the heel of her hand.

"You want me to say it in front of everyone? That's what you want? Fine."

She looked up at the pack.

"I knew," Odette said.

Her voice carried, because the courtyard had gone dead quiet.

"Not the tea. Not the whole of it. But I knew from sixteen that the light wasn't mine."

"How?" the elder asked.

"Because it came and went with her." She pointed at me without looking. "When Linnea was sick, I dimmed. When she cried, I glowed. I felt her in me like a hand inside a glove."
