The transplant office was a small room with a box of tissues on every surface.
My mother was already there, sitting very straight in her good blue cardigan, with her purse in her lap.
She had taken a cab by herself.
The coordinator stood behind the desk holding a single sheet of paper.
She was a kind woman in her fifties, and she wanted to be anywhere else.
"Mrs. Candler asked me to say this in front of her daughters," she said.
"Say it," my mother said.
"This morning the center received notice that the Tattnall Foundation is withdrawing as your financial guarantor."
"The center requires a guarantor for post-transplant care. Without one, a patient moves from active to inactive."
"Inactive means no offers," I said.
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"Until a new guarantor signs. If one hasn't by Friday at noon, the committee reviews the file."
