Chapter 24: Clause Twelve

"Clause twelve," I repeated.

"Draft," Weston said. "Subject to your review."

He sat on the edge of the bed and handed me the legal pad.

His handwriting was cramped and careful.

I read what he had written.

CLAUSE 12. Either party may break any clause of this agreement at any time, with the lips.

I read it twice.

"With the lips," I said.

"I tried five other words. They were all worse."

"That's not a clause. That's a pickup line with a number."

"It's a first draft."

I found his pen on the quilt and uncapped it.

"Where's your red?" he said.

"I don't need red."

I crossed out the first word and wrote above it.

Both parties.

I crossed out at any time and wrote at any hour, in any room, with or without cameras.

At the bottom I added, in block capitals, as I had on the chairwoman's stationery: NO NOTICE REQUIRED.

Weston read it over my shoulder, and I felt his breath on my ear.

"You're making it worse."

"I'm making it enforceable."

"Counselor."

"One more thing."

I wrote it carefully, so he could not say afterward that he had not seen it.

Neither party may ever again leave a room without first saying where they are going and when they will come back.
