Chapter 21: A Dollar
We reached the cottage road at one in the morning, and I expected to find Stanford Lorring with a crowbar.
Instead, the whole road was blocked by mowers.
Eleven riding mowers stood nose to tail across the gravel, with their headlights off and their engines cold.
The woman with the crew cut sat on the lead mower, drinking from a thermos lid.
"Evening," she said.
"You cut the chain," Ramsay said.
"We cut the chain." She shrugged. "The old treasurer's demolition outfit has a bulldozer booked for six this morning. Paid in advance, before the vote."
"Nobody told the contractor the vote went the other way," said the man on the second mower.
"We thought we'd tell him in person."
I laughed until I had to put my hand on Ramsay's arm.
He looked at the row of mowers, and then at me, and his mouth did something complicated.
"I have a lawyer," he said. "I'll call the contractor at five."
"We'll still be here at five," the woman said.
They stayed.
Birdie brought coffee at three, and a folding chair for each of them, and at some point somebody started telling stories about my father.
The time he had mowed a perfect heart into the sixth fairway for a member's anniversary and been fined for it.
The year he'd named every gopher on the course.
I sat on the cottage porch step and listened to eleven strangers describe my dad better than I ever had.
At half past five, a flatbed truck with a bulldozer on the back rolled up the gravel, slowed, and stopped.
