Chapter 18: Sir
Sir Ferdinand did not stand up.
"Mr. Ullrich," he said. "I promised you capital. I did not promise you a creek."
"You promised me a buyer, a pipe and your name on the paper." Lamar's voice dropped, and carried anyway. "I borrowed against your sixty percent, Ferdinand. Four million dollars from a bank in Austin, on a company whose only asset is a stream that doesn't exist."
The hall had turned its head.
Two hundred people were pretending to eat pie.
"That," said Sir Ferdinand slowly, "is your note."
"It's your name on the guarantee."
Sir Ferdinand looked at the table in front of him, at the plate he had not touched.
I saw the moment he understood.
His money was no longer a lever.
It was a rope, and the other end was around Lamar Ullrich's neck, and the knot was in his own hand.
"Sit down, Lamar," said Zelma Rudd, from the next table.
She had not raised her voice, either.
"I have lived on this road for fifty-one years. I have never asked a man for an apology in my life."
