Chapter 20: Boxed
On Tuesday morning three faces from Mayfair looked out of my laptop at Orville's kitchen table.
I knew all of them.
The head of Legal sat in the middle.
The friend who had texted me sat on her left, and my own deputy on her right.
They looked as if they had not slept.
"The board met all of yesterday," the head of Legal said. "Sir Ferdinand resigned the chair at six o'clock this morning."
I set down my coffee.
"Resigned."
"He told them everything, Jemima. The water company, the guarantee, your model."
"He put it in writing."
She took a breath.
"It's the first time in twenty years anyone has seen him do it unprompted."
"The stake is being unwound by Friday," my deputy said. "At a loss. He told them to take the loss."
I thought of the back of a rodeo program, and a hand that had trembled.
"The board would like to offer you the chair."
I stared at the screen.
"Pardon?"
"Managing partner. A seat on the board, the full partnership, effective immediately."
