Chapter 21: Last Move
Rex was off the swing before the headlights had finished going out.
"Phone," he said. "Fire chief. Now."
I already had it in my hand.
Down the lane, a door opened and shut.
A figure in a white shirt walked toward the barn in the moonlight, carrying a red can in each fist.
It was Lamar Ullrich.
He went in through the big door.
"Seven horses in there," Rex said. "Jem, stay back."
"No."
I ran.
I got halfway across the yard before the whoosh.
Orange light went up the barn wall in a sheet, and from inside came the high, tearing scream of a frightened horse.
Lamar came out of the door backwards, a match still burning in his fingers.
He saw me.
He saw Rex running behind me, one arm strapped to his chest.
He threw the match into the straw, got in his truck, and drove into the dark with no lights on.
As the truck passed the cattle guard, the passenger door swung open and a boy rolled out onto the lane.
He had a bandaged hand and a grey face.
I did not stop to think about him.
