Chapter 24: Hollow Oak
Zelma sat on the porch swing with the folder open on her knees and read it to us in her skillet voice.
"This is the last page of Orville's will. He added it in August, the day he signed Rex's lease."
"He made me promise to hold it until you'd stayed past the first fire."
She cleared her throat.
"'To Rex Carew, the north eighty acres where my creek comes out of the rock, and the line shack on it.'"
Rex went white.
"'On one condition.'"
"'He is to tell Jemima his real name before the first frost.'"
"'If he hasn't, Zelma has my permission to hit him with her cane.'"
The porch exploded.
Rex put his good hand over his face, laughing helplessly.
"He told her on the fourteenth," said Zelma. "First frost is Thursday. He made it by two weeks."
"I'm disappointed about the cane."
"'And if she's staying,'" she read on, "'hang a board on the front gate with both their names.'"
"'Don't argue about the order.'"
She shut the folder.
"The spring head is yours, Rex. Hers is the rest."
