Chapter 13: Amos
Amos's POV
I had practiced telling her since December, and none of it was any use.
She sat in Nils's chair with the page under one hand and his pencil on the table beside it.
Her face was white and set.
It was the face he wore when he'd made up his mind about a bull.
"Say it," Karin said. "Not the lawyer's part. Yours."
I put my hat on the counter and stayed where I was.
I didn't trust myself to cross that floor.
"It was a Tuesday in December," I said. "He'd had a bad night, and he sent the nurse out."
"I know the Tuesday."
"Then you know I came in and he was awake."
She watched my mouth.
"He said, 'Take her, Amos.' The way he'd ask me to take the dog if he went first."
My voice wasn't steady, and I let it not be.
"I said, 'She's a kid, Nils. Don't ask that of me.'"
"I heard that part," she said.
"I know you did. You went for coffee after, and you didn't hear the rest."
Her hand closed on the edge of the page.
"What was the rest?"
"I said, 'Ask her when she's free to say no. Not from a bed, and not from a will.'"
I made myself hold her eyes.
"I told him I wouldn't be handed you like a gate."
She breathed in through her nose.
"Why 'kid'?" she said. "Why that word, to him?"
"Because it was the only word he'd stop on."
"That's a coward's answer," she said.
"It is."
I didn't argue it.
"If I'd said what you were to me, he'd have died believing I took you for the water right."
I rubbed my face.
"I'd rather he thought I couldn't stand the idea."
