By ten the last car had gone down River Road.
The lawn was empty except for the Midsummer pole and a dog asleep under a table.
My aunt hugged me at the gate and said, "Your mother would have liked him," and I had to hold on to the arch.
Amos carried the page into the house in both hands.
He set it on my father's desk, face up, under the lamp, and he stood and looked at it a long minute.
"I read it three times," he said.
"I know. I watched you."
"I'm going to read it again," he said.
"Later."
I took his hand.
I led him upstairs in my mother's dress, with the hem in my fist.
In my room I stood in front of the window with my back to him.
The last of the long blue light lay on the floor.
He came up behind me and undid the buttons down my spine, one by one.
Each one he kissed.
The linen fell, and I stepped out of it, and turned.
"Look at me," I said.
"I'm looking."
"Say what I am."
He knew the question.
