Chapter 10: A Woman

Lulu's POV

Darrell found me at the feed store on Tuesday, loading sacks into the truck bed.

He took the sack out of my arms and put it in himself.

"You shouldn't be lifting these alone, honey."

"I do it every week."

"I know you do. That's the trouble."

He leaned on the tailgate and tipped his hat back.

He was kind about it, and that made it worse.

"I'm going to tell you something because I'd want somebody to tell my own daughter," he said. "Ward's truck was in Billings yesterday. A friend of mine saw him go into a lawyer's office."

"He was buying feed."

"On the fourth floor?"

I put the next sack down.

"Darrell, what are you saying?"

"I'm saying a man who's been alone fourteen months and has a half share in nine hundred acres might be tidying up his options." He lifted a shoulder. "I'm not saying he is. I'd just hate to see a girl your age left holding a bag."

"He turned you down flat."

"He did. Which is why I'm worried about what he's doing instead."

He squeezed my arm.

"Come to dinner Saturday. Just you. Let me show you my breeding barn, and we'll talk like friends."

"I'll think about it."

"That's all I ask."

He smiled at me, warm and easy, and drove off.

I stood in the lot with a sack of oats against my chest.

I didn't believe him.

I turned it over the whole drive home, all the same.
