Chapter 15: Lake House
By midnight the police had been through Giselle's condo, her car, her mother's house, and the train station.
She had left her phone on the kitchen counter of the condo, with the screen cracked.
Two officers sat in the Harbor Lane driveway in a cruiser, in case she called.
She didn't call.
I stood at the island in the dark kitchen with both palms on the marble and my head down.
The housekeeper had baked biscuits all evening for the officers, and a drift of flour still lay across the stone.
I pressed my hands flat in it and didn't move.
"She's five," I said. "She's five, and she doesn't know what to be afraid of."
"Willa."
"She'll be scared and she'll hum, and Giselle will tell her to stop."
"Willa, look at me."
"I can't. I'll break."
He came around the island and took my wrists.
White dust coated my palms, and he turned them over and looked at the prints I'd left on the black marble.
Two hands, spread wide, with a smear where the heels dragged.
He went very still.
His breath changed.
"Christian?"
His eyes had gone somewhere I couldn't follow.
"You were here," he said, slowly. "You had flour to the elbows. You had it on your nose."
