Chapter 16: Constance
The lake house stood at the end of a gravel road with one lamp burning in the front hall.
Christian had called the state police from the car, and they were twenty minutes behind us.
Constance waited at the foot of the stairs in a camel coat, as straight as a post.
She held a leather ledger against her chest, and a sheaf of paper in her other hand.
"Where is she?" I said.
"Upstairs, in the blue room, asleep. Giselle is in the boathouse packing the cruiser."
Her eyes went to Christian.
"Please sit. I am going to say this once, and I cannot say it standing."
"I'll stand," Christian said.
Her mouth tightened, and she nodded.
"Your father lost money," she said.
"For two years before he died, in a shipping venture he told no one about."
"When I went through his accounts there was a hole of four hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
"Dad?" Christian said.
"The company could not have survived it being known."
