Chapter 17: Mommy
I took the back stairs two at a time, and Christian passed me in the kitchen.
We hit the lawn together, barefoot on the wet grass, and I caught his sleeve.
"Don't run," I said. "If you run she bolts."
"She's got my daughter on a dock."
"Our daughter. And she's got one hand on a rope. Walk."
He walked.
Every step down that long slope felt like walking into the sea.
Giselle saw us at forty feet and pulled Poppy against her leg.
"That's far enough," she called.
Her hair was in the same sleek knot, but a strand had come loose, and her voice cracked on the last word.
"Let her go, Giselle," Christian said. "The police are on the road."
"Then I have time to leave."
"Where? Across the lake? You'll have nowhere to land."
"Nowhere to land is better than a cell," she said.
She tugged Poppy toward the cruiser's ladder.
Poppy was in her striped pajamas and a coat that was too big, and she had a bare foot on the damp boards.
She looked back over her shoulder at me.
I stopped at the start of the dock, and I held both hands open at my sides.
