Chapter 19: Tanya's Night
Tanya chose the bar herself, a loud place in Fishtown with a back booth and a bartender who knew her order.
She slid into one side of the booth and pointed at the other.
"Sit," she told Abram. "Both of you. I'm going to inspect him."
"Tanya," I said.
"I've examined worse people at three a.m."
Abram sat down across from her with his hands folded on the table.
He looked patient, and a little amused, and I loved him for not being afraid of her.
"Questions," Tanya said. "How old are you?"
"Forty-one."
"Ever been married?"
"No."
"Ever hurt a woman in a way she didn't ask for?"
"No."
"Do you own a lot of rope?"
"A reasonable amount."
Tanya narrowed her eyes at him over her beer.
"She told me about the spanking," she said.
"She told me about everything, in more detail than I needed. I just need one answer."
"Go ahead."
"If she hadn't been Sheldon's ex, would you have said yes to Lise?"
I put my glass down.
Abram took a moment before he answered, and he looked at me, not at her.
"I said no three times, and Lise had told me whose ex she was each time. The third time she put a drawing on my desk, and I couldn't stop looking at it."
He turned back to Tanya.
"Sheldon's name is why Lise knew about her. It was never the reason I wanted her."
Tanya studied him for a long time.
Then she reached across the table and patted his hand twice.
"Okay," she said. "You can stay. If you hurt her, I know plenty of ways to do it so it looks like an accident."
"I believe you."
