Chapter 8: Rain on Fenn Street

It began to rain while I was on the bus.

By the time I reached Fenn Street, it was coming down in sheets, and I ran the last block with my portfolio over my head.

The green door was shut and the windows were dark.

The club was closed on Sundays, and I stood under the single light with water running down my face.

I had no right to be there, and no rule that said I could.

The door opened before I knocked.

Abram stood in the doorway in a grey shirt, barefoot, with the light of the stairwell behind him.

He looked at me, soaked through, and something broke in his face.

"I said Saturdays," he said.

"I know."

"You didn't come on a Saturday."

"You said tonight."

He stepped out into the rain.

He stepped all the way out, past the awning, and the water ran into his collar and his hair.

He took my face in both of his hands.

"I don't touch you outside these walls," he said.

"Then touch me inside."

He kissed me.

It was hard and wet and deep, and my back hit the green door, and his hands slid into my hair.

I grabbed his shirt and pulled him against me.

"Upstairs," Abram said against my mouth. "Now."

He took me up three flights of iron stairs, one hand locked around my wrist, and through a door at the top.

His apartment was one long room of brick and dark wood, with a bed at the far end under a skylight full of rain.

He pulled my wet sweater over my head and dropped it on the floor.

My bra went next, and then my skirt, and I stood in the lamplight with the whole length of my body on show, shivering.

He didn't tell me to lift my arms.

He looked at me with his hands at his sides.

"I've wanted to see you like this for three weeks," he said. "You're better than I imagined."
