Chapter 14: The Mausoleum
Quino drove me to the cemetery at four that afternoon, in my father's Lincoln, with his eyes on the road.
I sat in the back seat and watched the side of his face in the mirror.
I had not slept.
My thighs still ached from the kitchen floor, and every bump on Bayshore reminded me of it.
"Quino."
"Yes, Tina," he said.
"Stop at the light."
He stopped.
I leaned forward between the seats and put my mouth against his ear.
"Tell me what he said to you in that text."
"Nothing more," he said.
"Then what do you think it is?"
He turned his head, and our faces were very close.
"I think he is afraid," he said. "I think it is worth hearing."
The light changed.
I put my hand on the back of his neck, under the cropped hair, and left it there until the cemetery gates.
The mausoleum stood at the end of a gravel path, white marble with a bronze door and two stone urns of dead lilies.
Inside, my father's niche was in the third row up, with the new marble still bright.
His name was cut into it in clean letters.
