Chapter 21: The Mass

At the Mass I sat in the front pew between Rafa and Quino, and Dom sat behind me.

His fingers rested on the back of the pew, and every time I moved, my hair brushed them.

Nunzio sat across the aisle with his silver head bowed and his ring on the hymnal.

I did not look at him once.

At noon the club was full.

Every cousin, every aunt, every old man from the domino room stood under the slow ceiling fans.

Each held a plate in one hand and a glass in the other.

The head table stood at the far end.

My father's chair sat at the head of it, high-backed, dark leather, with a cushion worn into the shape of him.

The old men stood up when I came in.

One by one, the whole room, with a scrape of chairs.

I walked down the long floor with Dom at my left, Rafa at my right, and Quino at my back.

I did not go to the chair.

I stopped at the foot of the table, where a thin man in a gray suit sat with a leather folder and a pen.

The notary.

Nunzio rose from his seat halfway down the table, smiling.

"Cara," he said. "You came. Sit, sit. We were about to begin."

"Begin what?"

"A small family matter." He lifted his glass, and the room hushed. "Family. Forty days ago we lost a great man."

Nobody moved.

"He left a house full of grief, and a business that must go on. I have taken up the weight, as is my duty."
