Chapter 22: The Domino Room

I sat on the big domino table in the empty club with my dress hiked to my hips.

The green felt was rough under my thighs.

The last of the afternoon came red through the high windows.

The tiles lay scattered around me, where I had swept them with my arm.

The three of them stood in front of me, still in their black funeral suits.

"Strip," I said.

They stripped.

Rafa threw his jacket across a chair and dragged his shirt over his head, and the gold crucifix swung.

Dom folded each piece and laid it on the next chair.

Quino was already bare to the waist, and he watched me, and did not blink.

When they were naked, I took Dom's silk pocket square from where he had laid it, and held it out to Quino.

"Tie it on me," I said. "Over my eyes."

He took it.

"Tonight the lead is yours," I said. "All of it. Every order."

Quino's fingers stopped on the silk.

"I'll be able to name each of you," I said. "By touch. I've had you all long enough."

"Tina."

"Yes."

He tied the cloth behind my head, gently, and the room went dark.

I heard his breath in front of me.

I heard Rafa shift on his bad knee, and Dom stand quite still.

Then Quino spoke, low and level, in the empty hall.

"I love you."

My whole body went quiet.

"I said it once in the dark," Quino said. "On the stairs, where no one could see."

"I'm saying it in the light, with Rafa and Dom standing here."

"Quino," I said.

"A driver doesn't get the boss's daughter in daylight. That is what I thought for ten years."

His thumb brushed my cheek.

"I was wrong. I love you, and I'm not afraid to be seen doing it."

I turned my face into his hand.

"I love you," I said. "I love you, Quino. I should have said it on the stairs."

His breath broke, short and ragged.

He kissed me.

It was slow, and deep, and unhurried, and when it ended he put his forehead against mine for a moment.

"Lie back," he said, in his ordinary voice. "Rafa. Dom. Take her."

I lay back on the felt.

The tiles dug into my shoulder blades, and I did not care.
