Chapter 29: The Builder's Stair
The stair behind the slab had not been in the glass room on Friday night.
Seok-hyun found it at six on Saturday morning, the sixteenth of January.
He came down the thirty-four steps with a lamp and found his mother asleep with her hand curled under her cheek.
The wall behind her head was open.
It was a black square in the coal-glass, the width of two men.
A draft came up out of it that smelled of wet stone and something green.
The Ledger lay across the corner of his eye.
[Floors open: 3 of 3. Another stair is not on this Ledger.]
He read the second line twice.
In two months the Ledger had told him everything the Pit would do, and in two months it had been right about every count.
It had never before told him of something it did not hold.
He knelt by the slab and spoke to the Pit, as he always did, in the plainest rule he had.
"Door," he said.
"None but the Gwon house, and the bearers of a tag from my hand, and the people of Taebaek on Open Lamp Day who carry their own lamp, and none who carry a cap."
The Ledger said nothing.
He tried Spawn.
He tried the Rest, which was the only rule he had that touched her.
The Ledger did not answer, and the glass walls gave back his voice with no shape on it.
It was the first time since the ninth of November that a word of his had not been read.
