Chapter 30: The Seat
The sixth chair on the plywood dais had been brought from the lamp house that morning, and it was Seok-hyun's.
It was an ordinary kitchen chair with a split in the seat.
The clerk had draped a strip of the green cloth over it so that it matched the five.
He sat down in it at five to ten on Saturday the twenty-third of January.
He wore his father's funeral suit, with the sleeves let down by Sun-ja.
The museum hall filled in front of him until the aisles were standing room.
Under the model of Pit Nine, the Director's place at the center of the table was empty.
His hat lay on it.
The letter had been read at nine, by the clerk, in a flat voice.
The Director of the Hunter Association tendered his resignation from the chair of the licensing board and from the directorship.
It took effect on Monday, so that he could take up residence in the Cheoram valley.
He gave no reason beyond one line.
I am a keeper, and a keeper sleeps within thirty kilometers of the shaft.
The board had met on Thursday in closed session and voted three to one to seat a keeper's member.
It was the first amendment the Act had had in seven years.
That was the seat Seok-hyun sat in.
He had not wanted it, and he had told them so.
The professor had said that the people who wanted a seat were the ones the board ought to worry about.
She presided now, in the center chair, in her severe gray bun.
