Chapter 13: The Plan
On Friday evening Knox cleared his small table and set my tablet in the middle of it.
Bridget came straight from home in her bakery apron, with an hour before her shift.
"Say it plain," she said. "What are we doing to this woman?"
"Nothing she hasn't done to me," I said.
I had thought about it all day, in the spare room, with my hand flat on my stomach.
Glenda had made me a rule: stay away from the shower, stay quiet, be generous to a widow.
Forty people would clap for Nicolette on Saturday, and most of them had clapped at the toast.
I wanted every one of them in the room when it came apart.
"Tell me about your mother's living room," I said to Knox.
He rubbed his jaw.
"Big TV over the fireplace. She put in a streaming stick at Christmas. Anyone on the house wifi can put their screen on it."
"Anyone?"
"She can't work it herself, so Corin does it. Every party, he runs the photo slideshow from his phone."
"And Saturday?"
"There's a slideshow." His mouth went flat. "Mark and Nicolette, from the wedding on."
Bridget leaned back and the chair creaked.
"So we put the note on a forty-person TV."
"Yes."
"It's just a list. She'll say Corin wrote it, and she'll cry."
"It isn't just a list," Knox said. "It's live."
I looked at him.
"Every time Corin stepped off the page, a new line showed up," he said. "Within minutes. Your first night, it came while his car was still leaving the curb."
"She watches it."
