Chapter 16: Knox's Porch

Knox's POV

My mother stood in my stairwell with the rain running off her coat, and I did not step aside.

"Not tonight, Mom," I said.

"I'm asking nicely."

"I know. You're asking after being wrong for three years. It's late."

Behind me, in the kitchen, Willa had gone quiet.

Then I heard her chair slide back.

She came and stood at my shoulder, and I felt her there before I saw her.

"Glenda," she said. "Not tonight. Come tomorrow at ten and I'll listen to all of it."

My mother looked at her for a long moment.

"At ten," she said. "Thank you."

Willa went back into the kitchen and shut the door.

Corin had already slipped down the stairs, with his head down.

I took my coat off the hook and said, "I'll walk you to your car."

The porch light buzzed over the wet steps.

My mother stood under it with her purse in both hands, and she looked older than she had at the shower.

"You told me twice," she said.

"I did."

"You told me at Christmas that Nicolette was running your brother. I told you to stop being jealous of him."

"I wasn't jealous."

"I know that now." She looked at the rain. "I knew it then, if I'm honest. I didn't want it to be true. I loved that girl at nineteen, and I wanted her to be what I thought she was."

I said nothing.

I had waited a long time to hear her say any of it, and now that she had, I found I wanted nothing from it.
