Chapter 18: Corin's Costs
On Thursday at noon, Corin was sitting on the bench outside my dental office with a paper bag on his knee.
It was the day he wrote to me about the baby, and he had written, and I had answered in two lines.
He had not asked to see me.
He was just there, in the cold, with his collar up.
I sat at the other end of it with my sandwich.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said. "I wanted you to know what I did."
"You wrote it to me already."
"I wrote the baby part." He turned the paper bag over. "I haven't told you the rest."
I waited.
"On Sunday night I sent a message to everyone I know," he said. "My team, my friends, the guys from the league. I told them what Nicolette did and what I did. I told them I lied to Willa for three years and that I'm not proud of it."
I put the sandwich down.
"All of them?"
"Sixty-one people."
"What happened?"
"My boss called Monday. I'm on leave, two weeks, while they decide." He looked at the pavement. "My best man wrote back one line. He said, You spent three years treating Willa like a pet and now you want credit for noticing. I haven't heard from him since."
"He's right."
"I know he's right."
"You didn't have to send it."
"I did." He said it plainly. "Everyone was already getting Nicolette's version. I wasn't going to let people hear mine from someone else."
I looked at him, and for once he met my eyes.
"I moved out of my mother's house," he said. "She wanted me to stay, and I couldn't sit in the room with her."
