Chapter 4: The Sync Menu
Knox did not want to talk in the courtyard.
He walked us to his truck, opened the passenger door for me and left it open, so Bridget could stand in the street and keep her eyes on both of us.
She folded her arms and gave him a look I had last seen her give a man who tried to cut the bakery line.
"I'm fine with that," Knox said.
He got in on the other side and left a full seat of space between us.
The cab smelled like coffee and rubber gloves.
"What do you mean he didn't write it?" I said.
"Open the tablet. Settings, then Accounts, then Notes."
I did.
The screen showed a list I had never looked at, because I had never had a reason to.

Corin's phone.
Our tablet.
And a third, labeled M's iPhone.
Under it, in small grey type: Last active 6:02 a.m.
I read it again.
At 6:02 that morning Corin had been standing in the courtyard with both hands around a thermos.
He had not typed anything.
"That's her phone," I said.
"It's signed into the account Corin set up last spring for wedding planning," Knox said. "He asked me to fix a sync problem on it. I saw it then."
"You saw her phone on our tablet's account six months ago?"
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell me."
He looked straight ahead through the windshield.
"I told Corin," he said. "At Christmas, in his kitchen, and again in August in the driveway. I said, you can't run your life off Nicolette's list. He said you loved it. He said you told everyone."
