Chapter 5: Oat Latte
I went because I wanted to see her face.
Bridget wanted to come, and I told her no, and she followed me as far as the corner anyway.
The café sat two blocks from the university, where Nicolette and I had split a one-bedroom apartment for three years.
She was already at the window table when I walked in, and she stood up.
She had lost weight.
Her light brown hair hung loose and her grey eyes were red at the rims, and she wore a long cardigan that I had once borrowed without asking.
"Willa," she said, and her voice broke on it.
Before I could decide what to do with my arms, she put them around me.
She smelled like the same lavender soap she had used in college.
"I'm so sorry," she said into my shoulder. "I'm so, so sorry."
I let her hold me for a second and then stepped back.
On the table were two cups.
She pushed one toward me.
"Oat milk, one pump of vanilla," she said. "You always got that in sophomore year. I didn't know if you still did."
I did.
That was the awful part.
In three years, Corin had never once ordered it for me.
"Thank you," I said, and sat down.
She sat too.
Her hand shook a little when she picked up her own cup, which held black decaf.
"I want to say it before you do," she said. "I never meant for any of this. Mark died, and everything went dark, and Corin was the one person who kept calling. I leaned on him. I leaned much too hard."
"At midnight."
"I was throwing up in the bathroom and I was alone. I panicked." She covered her mouth. "I should have called my sister. I should have called anyone who wasn't your fiancé."
