Chapter 13: Not a Favor
Rhoda opened her door in Queens at eleven that night and did not ask one question.
She took my duffel, looked at my face, and said, "Spare room's made up, kid."
It was a narrow room with a quilt, a radiator that knocked, and a window onto a fire escape.
There was a plate of pierogi on the nightstand, covered in foil.
I sat on the bed with my boots still on and let the radiator knock for me.
I had a ring on my hand that a widower had carried in his coat for nine years.
I had a husband who had picked me himself and then spent two weeks calling me a favor.
I could not decide which one of those hurt more, so I held both.
At some point I took the ring off.
It left a pale stripe on my finger, and I looked at that for a long time.
I did not put the ring on the bootlace.
I put it in my coat pocket, where it clinked against a roll of mints Rhoda had given me.
On Monday I slept until three and woke up angry, which was an improvement.
Angry I could clean with.
