Chapter 18: The State Fair
By October, Ybarra Alterations had a waiting list, and Levi had a pay envelope that was all his own.
He had framed eleven houses for his old foreman since March.
His hands had calluses on them again, and his waist had filled out.
I knew because I measured him every Sunday and wrote it in pencil on the wall.
The Saturday of the State Fair, he showed up at the shop in jeans and boots and a straw hat.
"I'm taking you to eat something fried," he said.
"I have a client at one."
"She's at the fair too. She said so."
The fairgrounds in Fair Park smelled of cinnamon and diesel and hot oil.
A giant cowboy forty feet high stood over the midway, waving his hat and booming greetings in a voice that carried across the whole park.
Levi took my hand at the gate.
I let him.
We walked past the livestock barns and the car show and a man selling spiral potatoes on sticks, and nobody looked at us twice.
