Chapter 19: Taking It Out
I had the coil taken out at nine that morning, and I told him at nine that night.
I told him in the dark, in the loft over the shop, with the lamp off and the street sign blinking pink through the curtains.
"It's out," I said.
He did not understand at first.
He lay on his back beside me in the bed we had bought together in June.
I felt him go quiet from his shoulder to his heel.
"Reyna."
"My choice. Nobody asked me. Nobody wanted anything." I rolled onto my side and put my palm flat on his chest. "I want this."
His heart hammered under my hand.
"Are you sure?"
"Don't ask me that," I said. "Touch me."
He turned toward me and cupped my face, and his hands were shaking.
I had never felt them shake like that, not on the lift, not on the swing.
"Look at me," he said.
"I'm looking."
"I'm scared to move."
"Then I'll move," I said, and kissed him.
It was a long slow kiss with nothing hurried in it.
I felt every inch of his mouth, and he learned mine again.
He found the corner of the lip, the tip of the tongue, the soft place behind the tooth.
He rolled me onto my back and braced his weight on his forearms.
He pulled the sheet away.
The pink light from the sign fell across my shoulder, and my breasts, and my stomach.
He looked at all of it.
"I've seen you naked a hundred times," he said, hoarse.
"Not like this."
"No."
He lowered his head and kissed me under the collarbone, then lower, and took my nipple into his mouth.
I arched up into him.
He circled the tip with his tongue and sucked, soft and then hard.
I held the back of his head and told him in a whisper exactly how I liked it.
He did what I told him.
He moved to the other breast and kissed his way down my ribs, and then he stopped at my stomach.
He laid his cheek against it.
"I'm going to say something stupid," he said, into my skin.
