Chapter 14: Rehearsal
The church basement on Sunday smelled of burnt coffee and floor wax.
Folding chairs sat in a ring under a banner for a bake sale that had happened in June.
The woman in the gray coat was there before me, with three others, and every one of them stood up when I walked in.
Maribeth came in behind me carrying two buckets of white roses, because she did not know how to enter a room empty-handed.
"I don't do funerals without flowers," she said. "Who died?"
"Nobody yet," said the woman in the gray coat, and for the first time all of them laughed.
I told them the worst of it.
I did it fast and flat, and nobody in that ring looked away.
When I finished, a thin woman with silver hair said, "Your husband paid him."
