Chapter 24: Darker Shades
The Westport Playhouse held two hundred and ten seats, and by seven on Friday every one of them was full.
I stood in the wings with the script in my hand.
I wore a plain black dress and bare feet, because I had not worn heels on a stage since I was thirty.
The stage manager, a girl of about twenty with a headset and a pencil behind her ear, stopped beside me with a clipboard.
"Ms. Linden, it's a reading, so it's one light," she said.
"We have the warm wash that everyone picks, or the amber, which is darker and a little harsh."
"What does the amber do?"
"It shows everything," she said apologetically. "People usually hate it."
"Amber," I said.
She wrote it down without comment and went away.
Maribeth found me then, with a bunch of white roses wrapped in newspaper and a face already wet.
