Chapter 8: Off My Yard

I got off Cullen's lap so fast I hit my head on the cab roof.

Cullen pulled his T-shirt down.

Neither of us said anything.

There wasn't anything to say that would help.

My father unchained the gate, swung it open and stood beside it in the rain.

Cullen drove through at about two miles an hour.

He parked by the shop and turned off the engine.

The headlights went out.

Dad was still standing at the gate, dripping.

"Well," Cullen said quietly. "I've had worse nights. Not many."

"Let me talk to him."

"No. He's my friend. I'll take it."

We both got out.

Dad walked toward us across the gravel in his ruined slippers.

"In my truck," he said.

"Arie."

"In my truck. I bought that truck. I bought it from a Lutheran."

"Dad, go inside. You're soaked. You had a heart attack two weeks ago."

"And whose fault will the next one be?"

He pointed at Cullen with his whole arm.

"You. You were at my kitchen table on Christmas. You were in my hospital room. You held my hand when they put that stent in. I thought you were being nice."

"I was being nice."

"You were being nice to my daughter in a truck!"

A light went on in the house across River Road.

"Dad. The neighbors."

"Let them look! Everybody look! Arie DeVries's best friend is making out with his little girl in a 2009 Silverado!"

"I'm thirty," I said.

"You're my daughter."

"I'm thirty years old. I've been married for ten years. I filed for divorce eight days ago, in my own name, by myself."

He opened his mouth.

"I kissed him," I said. "Not the other way around. Last week in the steam shed I stopped it. Tonight I didn't want to stop."
