Chapter 6: Not Camille

Anthony stood in the study doorway in his black suit with one hand on the frame.

I slid Camille's phone behind my back.

"Mother said you were lying down," he said.

"I couldn't."

"No."

He came in and shut the door.

Of all the voices I had imagined him using to me in six years, this was none of them. It was low and tired and very careful.

"Sit," he said, and pointed at the sofa.

I sat, because Camille would have.

He did not sit. He took a folded paper from inside his jacket and held it between two fingers.

"Edmund gave me this at the church."

My throat closed.

"It says Ciara was at the shore at 11:41 and you called my mother at 11:45." He looked at the paper, not at me. "I have been trying to work out what happens in four minutes."

"I don't understand what that is," I said, in my sister's voice.

"Neither do I. That's why I'm asking you."

A tray of tea sat on the side table where a maid had left it.

I reached for the cup without thinking and poured, and I did not reach for the sugar.

Anthony watched my hands.

"Camille takes three sugars," he said. "She has since I've known her. She says plain tea tastes like a hospital."

"I've changed."

"Since this morning?"

"Since Ciara died," I said.

It was the truest thing I had said in that house.

He nodded slowly.

I put the cup down with my left hand.

His eyes dropped to it and stayed there.
