Chapter 13: Porch Hour
Colin Boswell was sitting on the Lund apartment stairs at six in the morning, still in his dinner suit.
Dixon found him there when he came out to scrape the frost off the truck.
He had one hand on the rail and a cup of gas station coffee going cold between his shoes.
He stood up when the door opened, and he looked like he hadn't slept at all.
"I need to see my sister," Colin said.
"Who gave you this address?"
"The housekeeper. She wrote it on a napkin and told me not to make her regret it."
Dixon pulled the door shut behind him and stood on the top step.
"She's asleep," Dixon said. "She was up with pain until four."
"Pain."
"Yes."
"Is she," Colin stopped and tried again. "Is she being looked after?"
"Every night. By people who didn't tell her they wished she was dead."
Colin took it without moving.
"I earned that," he said.
"You did."
"Who are you to her?"
"A friend," Dixon said. "The kind who stays."
Something in Colin's shoulders eased, and then he looked ashamed that it had.
Above them, the door opened again, and Angie stood in the gap in an oversized grey sweatshirt of Dixon's, her hair flat on one side.
She held a mug in both hands.
