Chapter 13: Armory
Forrest had the IV out of his arm before the helicopter blades stopped turning.
He pressed his thumb over the bead of blood and swung his legs off the cot.
"Lie down," I said.
"Fenn is carrying an order with my name on it."
"You can barely stand."
"If I'm in this bed when she walks in, I'm hers."
He stood up, swayed, and caught the rail with one hand.
I pulled my gloves back on and buttoned them to the elbow.
Every bare second I had given him had cost him something, and I was done spending it.
He saw me do it, and his mouth went tight.
"Mara."
"Boots," I said. "Where are your boots?"
He looked at me for a long moment, and then he pointed under the cot.
I laced them for him because his hands were shaking.
Neither of us said what that meant.
The loading door at the end of the ward let in a draft that smelled of snow still coming.
Trina was waiting outside it in her pajama pants and a parka, with her hood up and a ring of keys in her fist.
