Chapter 15: Cabin
The cabin was a one-room ranger shelter at the end of a logging track, half buried in new snow.
Forrest had found it on a run in his first week at Halloran, and he had told no one.
He drove the jeep into a lean-to behind it and cut the engine.
The silence afterward was enormous.
"No signal," I said, looking at the phone Trina had pressed on me.
"That's why I liked it."
Inside there was a woodstove, a bunk with a rolled mattress, a shelf of canned beans and a stack of split logs.
Forrest lit the stove with his hands shaking from the cold, or from something else.
I stood by the door with my gloves on and watched the fire catch.
When the room was warm enough to see our breath fade, he sat on the edge of the bunk and unbuttoned his coat.
Then his shirt.
I wasn't ready for it.
The black lines no longer ran up his arm and stopped at his throat.
They covered his chest now, a dark web across his ribs and collarbone.
Over his heart they gathered thick and still.
"They stopped there," he said.
"Forrest."
"Three days ago they were at my shoulder. This morning they stopped at my heart, and they haven't moved since."
