Chapter 21: Immune

"Stop," I said. "Forrest, stop right there."

He kept walking.

"I'm full. All of it is in me. If you touch me, it goes into you, and you'll die on this field."

"I read the file too, Mara."

"You didn't read the end of it."

"I did." He stopped an arm's length away, and his green eyes were bright and steady.

"I read it. I'm the only one who lived."

"Because you got lucky."

"Because it's my blood."

He held out his bare hand.

"Fenn said I was the source line. The agent started in me. It was always going to go back to its own."

I stared at his hand.

It was wide and square and scarred, the same hand that had lain flat on a steel table and asked me for one second.

I did not move.

"Please," he said.

The cadets on the field had gone quiet, and I did not care.

My palm came up of its own will, black and shining, and I laid it flat against his.

The pull rose.

It reached for him with everything it had, hot and hungry.

And then it found him, and it lay down.
