Chapter 19: Kelsey's Video

Kelsey was waiting on the bench at the bus stop, in the same spot where Marla had sat.

She wore jeans and a plain gray jacket, and her hair was pulled back in a rubber band.

There was no coffee cup in her hand.

"I'm not here to ask for anything," she said, before I had even stopped walking. "I just wanted you to see it with me looking at you."

She held out her phone.

On the screen was a video, posted two nights ago.

It had a plain background, no music and no filter, and it showed her at a desk.

I pressed play.

"My name is Kelsey Holm," her voice said. "For a year I made videos about my family. I laughed at my sister's receipts. I posted her private spreadsheet and called it honesty."

She went on for a few minutes.

She told them about the coffee, and the camera, and that she had spent money she did not know was my mother's.

She did not make herself the victim and she did not leave anything out.

At the end she looked into the lens.

"I'm sorry, Britta," she said. "I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just wanted people to know who was lying, and it was me."

I gave the phone back.

"How many people have watched it?"

"Two million." She laughed a little, and it cracked. "I lost a hundred and ten thousand followers in three days. The coffee company dropped me. The camera brand wrote to say they were pausing the partnership."
