Chapter 14: The Wall
Kenna's POV
Two knocks on the wall, slow and even.
I knew whose knuckles they were.
I lay still with the blanket at my chin, my skin still humming from Tate's mouth, and I thought: he knows.
Tate had said nothing.
Tate had tucked me in, kissed my forehead, and gone straight to Dylan's room.
The doorknob turned.
Dylan stepped in and shut the door behind him, and this time he didn't lock it.
He stood with his back against the wood in his basketball shorts, his hands hanging at his sides.
The light from the window fell across his chest.
"Tate told you," I said.
"Yeah."
"He broke my rule."
"He said so." Dylan's voice shook. "Wyatt says you wanted to tell me yourself."
"I was going to."
"When?"
"When I could stand to watch your face."
He winced.
It was a small movement, and it landed.
"You sat on this bed," he said. "Last night. I told you I couldn't sleep. I asked if you dreamed about us. You said 'sometimes.'"
"I did."
"And you were awake the whole time on Friday."
"Yes."
"Brody was in your closet."
"Yes."
"Brody was in your fucking closet," Dylan said, so loud I flinched.
"Keep your voice down."
"My dad is forty feet away."
"Then keep your voice down."
He dragged both hands through his hair.
He started to laugh, and the laugh cracked in the middle and became something that wasn't one.
"Four days," he said. "I've been sick for four days. I haven't eaten right. I looked at my own stepsister at breakfast and wanted to throw up. And you were lying there letting me."
