Chapter 16: All Hands

The car door slammed, and Dylan shot upright with his hair on end.

"That's your mom's car," he whispered.

"I know whose car it is."

"They're at work."

"Then why is it in the driveway?"

A second door slammed, and I knew the sound of his dad's truck without looking.

We stared at each other, naked, in broad daylight.

"Hall," I said. "Go, go, go."

Dylan snatched his shorts off the floor and pulled them on backwards.

He opened my door an inch, checked the hall, and slipped out.

I heard his bare feet pound into his own room.

I yanked on my tank top and sleep shorts and smoothed the sheet over the bed.

The front door opened downstairs.

"Kenna?" my mother called. "Are you up?"

Brody climbed in after it, shirtless, grinning.

The grin went out when he saw my face.

"I brought donuts," he said. "I thought we'd..."

"My mother is downstairs."

"What?"

"My mother and his dad. They're home."

He looked at the window, which was a long way down, and then at the closet.

"Under the bed," I said.

"I won't fit."

"Lie flat and breathe quietly."

He dropped to the carpet and wriggled under, and I kicked his bare feet in after him.
