Chapter 16: The Dragon Waits
"No," said Maelis.
"It was not a question."
"Then it is not an answer either."
He turned the chair on the narrow stair so that his face was level with hers.
"If I fall at the stair, Ruvane takes the keep.
"Your father takes you.
"I will not have you in this mountain when the war-fire is lit."
"Then make me go.
"Call your guards. Have them carry me down the north pass over their shoulders."
He said nothing.
His amber eyes moved over her face, and the hand on her wrist tightened.
"Call them, Torvald."
The silence stretched until the lamp on the wall flickered.
"Come," he said at last, and his voice was gravel. "To the chamber."
He did not speak on the way.
When the round door closed behind them, he turned the chair to the fire, and she crossed the room and stood in front of him.
"Say it again," she said. "That I should go."
"You should go."
"Look at me and say it."
He looked at her.
