The war-fire caught at dawn, white and roaring, and the challenge began.
Torvald rolled to the middle of the black circle with the ash-iron blade across his knees.
Ruvane waited opposite, on his own feet, with the second blade held easy in one hand.
Around them, four hundred dragons stood shoulder to shoulder.
Maelis stood among the elders at the edge of the ring.
Her hands were clenched in her skirt, and she kept them there.
The grey elder lowered his staff.
"Begin."
Ruvane did not rush.
He circled to the right, easy and light, and Torvald turned the chair on one wheel to keep him in front.
"You look tired, cousin," Ruvane said. "It must be heavy, being brave from a chair."
Torvald said nothing.
Ruvane lunged.
