Chapter 14: The Blindfold
The black silk went over his eyes at sundown, and she knotted it at the back of his head.
"Can you see anything?"
"No."
"Good."
Jinye's study was a square room at the top of the east tower.
It had a long desk of black glass and scrolls in racks to the ceiling.
One round window held the red moon.
She had cleared the desk with her forearm, and paper and ink had gone onto the floor.
Now she led him by the hand across the room and stopped him at the desk's foot.
"Kneel."
He knelt, a three-hundred-year-old emperor on a stone floor with a strip of silk over his eyes.
He wore only his trousers.
She had cut the rest of his clothes off him with a flick of her fingernail.
He had laughed at the sound of the ripping silk.
"Hands out in front of you."
He held them out, palms up.
She drew a thread of gold from her own fingertip, thin as a hair and bright as sunrise.
It wound around his wrists and ran to the leg of the desk, and when she pulled it tight, it hummed.
"What is that?"
"My qi. Since the ninth lightning I can make rope out of it." She kissed his jaw. "Pull."
He pulled.
The thread did not give, and his breath rushed out of him.
"That's new," he said hoarsely.
"Everything tonight is new."
She stepped back.
She sat on the edge of the black glass desk, with her feet on either side of his knees.
She took her time letting her robe fall open.
He could not see it.
That was the point.
"I'm going to tell you what I'm doing," she said. "You may not touch it. You may not come near it. You listen."
His lips parted.
"Qinghe."
"I've undone my sash. I'm sitting on your desk with my legs apart."
