Chapter 22: Every Mirror Watching
By midnight, a thousand mirrors hung over the Blood Moon Palace.
The Heavenly Court had sent five hundred, and the Abyss had made five hundred more.
They filled the courtyards, the corridors and the sky above the towers.
Each one was round and silver and covered in red cloth for the night, waiting for the wedding.
Heaven's custom said the bride and groom must not touch for a whole night before the vows.
The Abyss's custom said the same.
Qinghe had read both books and agreed with neither.
She had decided to keep the custom anyway, in her own way.
Her chamber was the tall room in the north wing, with a floor of red cedar and a bed of white silk.
The wall at the far side of the bed was a sliding screen of oiled paper in a black wooden frame.
On the other side lay Jinye's room.
She had asked for that on purpose.
He sat on the bare floor with his back to the paper, in his sleeping robe.
His shadow lay on the screen.
"Can you hear me?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Good. These are the rules for tonight."
His shadow turned its head.
"You may not come through. You may not slide the screen open. You may not touch me."
"Yes, my lady."
"You may touch yourself, but only when I say, and only as I say."
The shadow went very still.
"Qinghe."
"Take off your robe."
She heard the cloth slide.
His outline on the paper changed, broader, the lines of his shoulders and chest clean and dark.
"Are you naked?"
"Yes."
"Sit against the screen. I'm going to sit against it too. Our backs will almost touch."
She sat on the red cedar floor on her side, bare skin against the paper.
She felt the faint warmth of him through the thin wall.
