Chapter 10: The Hearing

Tullio was waiting outside the council chamber at dawn, alone, with a flat black case under his arm.

"You came," he said.

"You told me not to come unarmed."

"I know." He held out the case. "Open it."

Inside lay a custom 1911 with the Brancato crest set into the grip.

I closed my hand around it, and my fingers met the wood all the way.

The magazine release sat under my thumb, and the base of the magazine was smooth.

"Dad ordered it the night of the banquet," Tullio said. "Before the dinner ended. He knew the first one was wrong."

"Then why didn't he say so at the table?"

"Because Delfina was crying."

He looked at the floor.

"I looked away at that dinner, Nerina. I've looked away for a year. I'm done."

"What aren't you telling me?" I asked.

"There's something Dad hasn't told you, and I'm not allowed to say it." His eyes came up. "But I won't let them hang a lie on you."

I slid the pistol into my jacket, where I could reach it.

Then we went in together.

The chamber was full.

The council elder sat at the head of the long table with the ledger closed in front of him.

My father sat on his right.

My mother sat beside him in a grey coat, pale and thin from the hospital, and Delfina leaned on her arm.

My two brothers stood behind them.

Delfina saw me, and she began to cry.

"A struck name has the right to answer one accusation before the council," the elder said. "Delfina Brancato, say yours."

"I don't want to say it," Delfina whispered.

"Say it."

"The leak in the family is my sister." She sobbed. "She knew the schedule. She was angry. And now she's gone to the Corvis, and she's sleeping in the enemy's house."
