Chapter 15: The Night Before
Raimondo's POV
Nerina had asked Dad which daughter he meant, and I was already moving through the kitchen when the whole restaurant went quiet.
I watched Nunzio's face, and I knew what he was about to say, because I had heard him say it in his study.
It had started there, with a photograph pushed across a desk.
The night before the banquet, Nunzio Brancato poured me a drink I did not touch.
His study smelled of cigars and old paper.
He laid a photograph on the desk between us and pushed it across with two fingers.
"That's her," he said. "Twenty-seven. She passed the bar on the first try."
I looked at the woman in the picture.
She stood on courthouse steps with a file under her arm, and she was frowning at someone off camera.
"I told you two years ago," I said. "I won't take a wife as payment."
"The peace is paid in daughters, Raimondo. Your father signed it."
"My father signed it to end a war. The war is over."
"The war is over because of the paper."
He folded his hands.
"She doesn't know. I'll tell her at the end of dinner tomorrow. You'll sit in the empty chair. She sees you, she hears the clause, she makes a choice."
"There's no choice in that clause."
"She'll make one," Nunzio said. "She's mine."
I stood up so fast the glass rang against the desk.
"Then I'll talk to her first."
"You'll sit in the chair."
"I'll go and see her myself, before your dinner, and tell her the truth."
He watched me.
"You swore an oath before the council elder," he said. "Nobody but me tells her, or the peace ends tonight."
