Chapter 6: Who Gave You the Number

I did not scream, because screaming would not get me the answer I needed.

"Which container?" I asked.

My middle brother blinked. "What?"

"You said contraband was found in a container under my name. Give me the number."

Tullio frowned at me. "Nerina, we don't have time."

"If the police found it, why are my brothers at my door and not detectives with a warrant?"

Nobody answered that.

"Who called you? Who read you the container number?"

My middle brother snapped, because he hated being asked.

"Delfina read it to us off the dock sheet, it's right there on... "

He stopped.

My youngest brother looked at him.

"She had the dock sheet?" he said slowly. "Why would she have the dock sheet?"

"Shut up," my middle brother said.

"No," I said. "Keep going. Delfina has the dock sheet for a shipment she told the dispatcher I authorized."

"Did she read it to you before the police found anything, or after?"

My middle brother's face turned red, and his hand closed on my arm.

"You are coming with us, and you can ask the family."

"Let go of me."

"Tullio," my youngest brother said quietly. "Is she right?"

Tullio did not answer him.

He stood with his hand half out, looking at me, and for one breath I thought he would stop it.

"Take her," he said to my middle brother. "Gently."

They walked me out between them, one on each side with a grip on my arms.

The elevator was empty, and nobody talked in it.

I counted the floors and kept my phone recording against my hip.

The doors opened on the lobby.

Two men in grey coats stood in front of the glass door.

They were not from the building, and they did not step aside.
