Chapter 19: The Offer
"I do," I told the floor.
It was the only answer that did not need a meeting.
By evening the whole building knew, and by seven o'clock the whole building had gone home.
Nathan found me in the boardroom on twelve, in the chair at the head of the walnut table.
I had not planned to sit there.
My feet had simply carried me, to the seat that was always yours.
He stood in the glass doorway with a flat black folder under his arm.
"Security downstairs asked if I had an appointment," he said.
"What did you say?"
"That I had an offer."
He crossed the room and laid the folder on the table in front of me.
I opened it.
It was a term sheet, four pages, in plain language.
Harbor Line Freight would license the Hale routing engine for five years.
The price was three million dollars a year.
My name was on the license, spelled right, on the first line.
I read it twice, to be sure he had not rounded in my favor.
"That's less than Pinnacle pays," I said.
"Pinnacle's paying three point two because you set it. Mine's a different company."
