Chapter 20: Who Said Troy
Dot cut the pot roast herself and put the first slice on Bree's plate.
"Eat," she said. "You look thin."
Bree smiled at her with her whole face and did not touch it.
She had been seated between Edwin and his wife, across from Brennan, in the exact place where I had put her card.
She kept glancing at the empty chair beside me, and then at me.
I wore a plain black dress. I passed the potatoes and I said nothing.
"Brennan," Bree said, lifting her glass. "May I?"
He nodded once.
"To Brennan's thirty-fifth birthday," she said. "To a man who has spent this year being very brave about a very difficult arrangement."
Mrs. Hartwell frowned.
"And to the end of it," Bree said gently. "Some things aren't meant to last. I think everyone at this table is mature enough to say so."
She looked straight at me.
Nobody raised a glass.
"I'm not sure what you mean, dear," Mrs. Hartwell said.
"Lena knows." Bree's voice dropped, kind and sorry. "I'm sorry to say it here. But she told Brennan last night she's leaving. She couldn't even come to the lawyer's office this morning, because she was waiting in Troy."
The room was very quiet.
Dot put down her knife.
"Troy," said Brennan.
"Wherever it was." Bree's smile did not move. "I only heard it from Lena."
"You never heard it from me," I said.
I set my napkin beside my plate.
"A text came from my husband's number last night. It said the lawyer had moved the meeting to nine in the morning, at an office in Troy."
"I don't know anything about a text."
