Chapter 17: The Fitting
The tailor's shop on Madison had a three-way mirror and a door that locked.
Eliot stood on the fitting platform in a long midnight-blue coat, with no shirt under it.
Eliot looked at three of himself.
It was the fourth of January.
He was thirteen weeks along, and for the first time his body had a curve it had not asked for.
"Let out an inch at the waist," the tailor said, kneeling at his hem with a mouth full of pins. "Another at the seam, and the line will fall right. It'll fall over everything."
"Thank you."
"Mr. VanDusen wants to see the hem."
"Mr. VanDusen can see it from the chair."
The chair was a velvet armchair against the far wall.
It held a very large man in a charcoal suit, who had said almost nothing for forty minutes.
He had watched.
His elbows were on his knees, his hands were clasped.
His gray eyes followed every movement of the tailor's hands up and down the blue silk.
The tailor looked from one to the other, removed the pins from his mouth, and stood.
"I'll fetch the lining," he said, and was gone, and the lock turned behind him.
Silence settled over the little room, thick and warm.
Eliot kept his eyes on the mirror.
"You can come closer," he said. "You've been breathing through your mouth since the door."
August rose from the chair.
He walked across the carpet and stopped at the foot of the platform, and then, without being told, went down on one knee.
His big hands took hold of the silk at Eliot's ankles.
"The hem is crooked," he said, hoarse.
"It isn't."
"I need to check."
